What most people don’t realize is that this problem was brewing for years. Back in June of 2021, Southwest Airlines had a data problem that disrupted travel, causing the company to cancel 500 flights and delaying 1,300, as reported by KUT.org. When weather played a major factor in delays this December, the company’s antiquated technology systems in combination with the operational hiccups again made for a perfect storm of chaos and frustration – this time affecting upward of 5,500 flights. This recurring issue has turned into a problem of their own making because they did not invest in updating their technology infrastructure or were slow to react the first time.
